Wicklow town rock chick Corrine Crennan, was crowned ‘All Airland’ Air Guitar Champion at a jam packed Bridge Tavern on Fri Aug 1st and in the process picked up a kool €200. She is pictured with joint runners up Andy Aherne and Johnny Shotgun. The event was in aid of the RNLI and we await news of the final collection tally.
The golfers were first out of the traps on Thurs July 31st Wicklow Golf Club’s annual Open 4 Ball. Another sporting event followed later in the evening when Wicklow Town played Rathnew in the second game of
the Over 35’s Soccer Tournament. Umbrellas were required when the Georgina & Ken Doyle organised ‘Adult Treasure Hunt’ started at Church St. The Kilmant Players put on an excellent performance of ‘Time Gentelam Please’ at their dinner theatre event in the Grand Hotel. All roads then led to the ‘Old Forge’ for the penultimate ‘Singing Pubs’ performance. Hugely entertaining performances from Breffini Carroll, Inga, Ashling, Dermot and all the Bar Staff.
Children’s events are always at the heart of any festival – and on Wednesday July 31st children took centre stage at the Junior “Stars in their Eyes” competition in the Grand Hotel. This event was kindly sponsored by www.everestmusic.com and excellently organised by Padraig Boyce. Slightly earlier, a huge crowd and 4 teams assembled at Bachelors Walk to witness the ‘Barpersons Race. The Car Treasure Hunt and Maritime Walk proved equally popular on a balmy night. As darkness descended, those with enough energy bought one way tickets to the Singing Pubs in Ta Se’s. The Craic was Miley…I mean mighty.
A huge crowd as usual turned out for the Children’s Treasure Hunt on Tuesday July 29th. This popular
event was once again organised by Brendan & Mary Flynn. Earlier, Infants had a complimentary fun morning at Kid Zone. Soccer’s ‘Elder Statesmen’ began their 4 match mini-tournament at Rathnew. Later in the evening, a low tide greeted hundreds of yellow ducks, which were then released to freedom to participate in the charity Duck Race at the Parnell Bridge. All monies collected
were donated to The Wicklow Swimming Club & the Blue Dolphins.
The newly crowned Regatta Queen attended her first official engagement at the ‘Young at Heart’ night in the Grand Hotel, but only shared star billing, as her father, Anthony, was MC for the night. Musicians, Thomas & Shay were as brilliant and popular as ever.
Simultaneously, The Leitrim Lounge was jam-packed for their entry into the Singing Pubs Competition. A fantastic show as usual.
A relatively quiet day on Monday July 28th which began in the early evening when Children from the
Christine Dunne School of Dancing give a fine exhibition of traditional dancing at the Leitrim Lounge.
Events were then concentrated at the Grand Hotel where the Regatta ‘Open Photo’ Competition and judging of the ‘Best Dressed Doll’ competition took place.
The swimmers and archers were first out of the traps on Sunday 27th July. On a sun drenched Leitrim place - hundreds gathered to participate and watch the Golly Fishing Competition. John Finlay hosted a leisurely historic walk through Wicklow's past - and then the crowds gathered again and enjoyed some fantastic live music by ‘Feel the Pinch’ & ‘Hipple St’ at the gig rig.
Proceedings for the day concluded at the annual Regatta Queen Ball - where Ms. Leona Franey was crowned 2008 Queen. There was well over 4000 txt votes cast for the competition! Special thanks to Paula McEvoy for organising this event.
Proceedings on Saturday July 26th began simultaneously with the Farmers Market ouside Supervalu and
the Bike & Scooter Rally in the Murrough Car Park. In glorious sunshine, hundreds turned out to witness both a fabulous Tug o' War at 'The Riverbank' and the Open Air Chess Challenge in the Old Gaol. Earlier, we had a disappointing turnout for the raft-race and maybe the price of a Barrel of Oil affected availability! Spirits were still high though, and there was a massive turnout at the Market Sq. for the Official Opening Ceremony. Crowds enjoyed music from our very own Eurostar -Robyn Kavanagh & local band Feedback. The children enjoyed face painting, bouncy castles and other street performers.
Kids and parents alike enjoyed the Coast to Coast funfair on the opening day of the 2008 festival. On a sundrenched day, rockers, head bangers headed straight to the Grand Hotel for both the Junior & Senior battle of the bands. A great turnout and some serious bands were on display – with both winners qualifying to perform on the gig rigs later in the week. Once again, Fitzpatrick’s Pub in Rathnew put on a fantastic one hour show as part of the Singing Pubs. Competently introduced by Sean Hollingsworth, some of the performers will up high up in the running for prizes.
The 2008 Wicklow Regatta Festival kicked off in fine style on Wed July 23rd with the annual “Singing
Pubs” competition. Hosts for the opening night were defending champions the Bridge Tavern. Bar Manager & MC Lenny Canavan introduced a fantastic one hour extravaganza to a jam-packed house. Musical accompaniment was provided by ‘Breakaway’. Highlights of the show included the ‘Bar Staff’ act, who performed music from “The Committments“. Others who excelled included Thomas & Catherine, Louise Jameson, Joe O’Connor and father & daughter combo of John & Lynsey Porter.
